Rebarrel?
About how much would it cost to have a bull barrel installed on my Rem 700 ADL in 7MM rem.mag?

Re: Rebarrel?
Which barrel? Depending on which barrel you want, you're looking at $250-$500+ for just the barrel. You may be able to get a bargain, but if you're paying for the bigger barrel to gain accuracy, you're opening up an expensive can of worms.

Thanks! I was just curious about how much it would run.

Re: Rebarrel?
What is it chamber in now?
Reason is, the boltface may need worked to allow a typically larger diameter "magnum" .532" rim. The 700 bolt is most commonly fit for the .473" case rim and base that the 243, 260, 25-06, 270, 280, 308, 30-06, 35Whelen, etc, etc, etc all use.
Not to mention the required action length needed. If you have a short action for the .243, 260, 308, it wont work. The long action may fit a 7mm Rem Mag. There is, or used to be, a "magnum" action for the typically longer magnum guns.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: Rebarrel?
You're going to need a new stock also.

Re: Rebarrel?
This is not necessarily true. Usually cosmetically people want a different stock, but it's not always "necessary". It's quite easy to sand down and inlet a stock for a heavier barrel. It all depends on what the user thinks looks "acceptable" or proportional. I will agree though, sporter stocks can look pretty silly with varmint or heavier barrels on the rifle.
Long action and "magnum" actions are identical. The only difference on the magnum action is thebolt face. The bolt face for long action .308's, .270's, 30-06 etc is different from the magnum bolt face on the 7mm and .300 magnums, as you noted before. The only difference is that the magnum actions come with the larger magnum bolt face, but they are the same length and dimensions. On some rifles there are VERY slight differences in the ADL action feed lips, but other than that, none. Great info that you posted up here.

Re: Rebarrel?
The correct answer is "expensive". If you'll search around, you'll find some threads about putting new barrels on rifles, and I have a thread about modifications for precision rifles. Excluding carbon wrapped barrels and exotic gain twist, etc, the more expensive barrel blanks will cost you around $400 fluted. Barrels without flutes will typically cost $85-125 less (depending on which company you get it from). Different companies have different prices, but you're looking at spending $300-400 for the blank itself. You'll spend quite a bit more money just to have the barrel threaded, crowned and reamed ($150-250), depending on who does it and what they charge. If it has flutes, it'll be even more expensive because it takes time to thread the barrel properly so that the flutes "time" and headspace properly.
To be perfectly honest, it's pretty silly to rebarrel a rifle without truing up the bolt face, action face, and lugs. Doing this much smithing on an action is usually considered "blue printing", even if the bolt isn't sleeved. When you talk about "blue printing" an action, you're looking at spending at least another $200 on having that done. If you don't have the action cleaned up, the barrel will never fit perfectly, and won't shoot as well as it's capable of. It will have stress induced from the improper fit, and it will be inconsistent and sloppy. So all in all, you're looking at spending around $600-850 to get a good barrel on the action and have it fit properly. If you're not HONESTLY looking into precision shooting, you can buy an entire new rifle for that much money (almost a 5R), sell the old one and get back a good share of that money, and be better off. Unless you want a custom barrel, and you've already shot the barrel out of your other rifle, and have extreme accuracy and consistency demands, it's probably not the route for you.

Re: Rebarrel?
Wow, I guess when "ol' painless'" gets shot out I'll just buy another rifle. I had read that belted magnums have short barrel lives and was considering my long term options.
