Question Best full size 1911 for affordability/quality?

I'm interested in adding a full size 1911 to my current collection. The more I learn about the history of the 1911, the more I like it. I currently have a rock island .45 commander with a hogue grip. It's a great gun, but I love the beauty of a full size. I've heard lots of good things about the Kimber Custom II for both price and quality. Are there any other full size 1911's that compare to the kimber in quality, features, and price? The price for the Custom II is about the max I can handle.

I loved my Taurus PT-1911. Great gun, functioned 100%, never a single FTE or FTF, ate every bit of ammo fed (including hollowpoints), and was incredibly accurate. I bought it brand new for $500. They've gone up a bit since then.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to look into both of these.

    I'll second that.

    whats your price range ?

If your looking at Kimber I assume you can spend at or near $1k. Look at the Springfield "loaded" models. I have also heard good things about the STI Trojan and Duty One at that price mark. If you can go a few hundred more the Springfield TRP has got to be the best bang for your buck going IMO.

If youll be at the next group shoot Bigjlen has a stainless TRP Im sure he would let you check out.

Since you like the RIA Commander, you should check out the RIA Tactical version, which is a Government (full sized) model 1911. For the price, it's not a bad deal. You can also check out the Springfield/Para Ord/Kimber or other makers as well.

    try this place....

They have forums with categories for just about all the major 1911 makers and you can get input from owners of these fine pistols a well.

Thanks for all the great advice so far. My budget would be 7-800 tops. More realistically, it would be great if I could find something in the 4-600 range. I'm not sure how cheap one can go for a solid 1911. Pre-owned is a possibility for me as well. I have never purchased a gun online or used. What is my best option for looking at used 1911's?

I'll second the Taurus bid. I was really impressed with the number of upgrades included with the PT1911. I have yet to find anything I want to add to mine! It's been a perfect shooter...I haven't logged one FTF, FTE or any other mishap.

Springfield and RIA are nice choices also, but the affordable models are usually plain Jane.
