    Default 357 magnum

picked up another s&w last evening.

it's a model 28-2. i have not looked up the dob yet, but it's prior to 1982.
known as the "highway patrolman" it is unique in the smith and wesson line in that it de-vovled from the model 27. the 27 can trace it's heritage straight back to the very first .357, "the registered magnum". so as the flagship of the line it had all the bells and whistles available, pricing it above what most people could afford. smith was also the only one producing a .357 at the time, so they had the market locked up.
so in early 1954, after hearing the cries for a lower priced version the HP was introduced as a utility version of the m27. one of the cost saving steps was to finish it in a matte blue, instead of the rich highly polished blue smiths are normally seen in.
production of the m28 ran 1954-1986. many a lawmen in the 50's and 60's walked their beat with a version of this shooting iron on their side.

as an "N" frame this is a big boy that can handle heavy loads, in order to do ugly things to bad men, either by the barrel or the butt.

this one sports a 4" barrel, and while it will not make full use of hot loads, i will not be found standing in front of one.
i have also become fond of the 4" barrels, it is a theme i shall continue with.

Very nice. The old pinned and recessed Smiths are getting harder to find at reasonable prices and that's a fine example. Congratulations!

    Sweet!
But why do you need so many guns?

I don't have a short temper, I just have a quick reaction to bullshit.

that's what i have been hearing, though i have an L frame that hasn't even been out yet. not sure when the 28 will go.
i'd like an m27 as well, but it's down the list a bit.....just too similar to the m28...unless i find a smoken deal.
a P&R m29 is at the top now.
