Re: New police car
Goes to visibility. Being that we are in such a litigious society, lessons liability in case of a crash. Now, keep in mind, each set of lights probably has a seperate on/off toggle so the officer can control which sets of lights to have on given the situation.

Re: New police car
6.5s is very slow to 60mph.
Also, if you're pricing this model to be below $100k+, you're gleefully mistaken. There is no way to recoup all of the design costs and custom production in such a limited margin. Maybe some PDs will be able to buy it for less than $50k of their money, but then Fed grants or some other form of our money is subsidizing a lot.
It just takes too much to bring a project like that to fruition.F*S=k

Re: New police car
I'm wondering if they're going to do a Glock-like clunker turn-in program for their old fleets.
And purpose-built isn't always reassuring ...

Re: New police car
Speaking from experience here (take it for what it's worth), there is not a bounty of government grant money out there for police/fire vehicles. What money is out there is divied up among a handful of communities out of thousands across the country that ask for money.
In reality, municipalities have very basic specs for police cars - and most of the specs are based around interior space and maintenance/fuel costs. They put out the specs for bid (as required by law) and local dealerships respond. If it's a huge department, they may work directly with the manufacturer. Since this Robocop car won't have any dealership network and most definitely won't be competitive with the $21K Impala, $21K Crown Vic (getting phased out in 2011), or the $22K Charger, you won't see too many of these in your community.
We moved from the Vic to the Charger. Much better gas mileage. Better maintenance costs, and very comfy inside. It also has plenty of room to mount radios, computers, and guns. There's simply no need for a "purpose-built tactical car."
