I've killed a lot of deer with the 87gr Hornady in .243.

The rules for rifle are just not the same as for pistols. 123gr should be fine in that caliber.

    Thanks for your help Lycanthrope

I think i like the hornady. A little more pricey but they are pretty reliable, no?
I will have to find someone who has them in stock, but if no one has them the gun shop down the street has those same winchesters.

Spire points should feed as well as ball ammo in most cases.

Don't obsess over hunting rounds so much. Almost any spire point will bring home the venison. It's not like ball ammo that needs velocity or fragment or pistol ammo that needs a hollow point to expand.

why would you EVER need more then 5 rounds (1 in the chamber, 4 in the mag)

faster cycling of the bolt? 1 shot 1 kill doesn't mean much I guess? also I kind of doubt the difference is signfigant enough to matter at all, 1/3 second vs 1/2 second?

good luck with this. I hope if you hit a deer its a perfect shot that drops it dead on the spot. I'm done with this thread
Yes, he should hunt with his 7mm.

It is your money, so go for it. Hey, does anybody know how I can modify my NAA .22 belt buckle revolver for Big 5 hunting in Africa? I know South Africa mandates .375 H&H as the minimum caliber for Big 5 hunting, but I want the "cool factor" of using the wrong tool. Similarly, can I drive nails with a phillips-head?

Hunt big game with your 7mm.

    So...we should flame everyone who uses a .22, .25, .32 for self defense? Basically, pistols...in general...are inferior.

    I mean......REALLY.

Who here is going to throw a stone when a pistol shooter is saying they are going hunting with a .357 and can shoot 5 inch groups at 100.....with iron sights (which is pretty good).......or.....well, don't get me started on bow hunting where instant kills are rare......and a gut shot is a lot harder to track than a rifle......

It's legal. He's looking for the best bullet.

As for morality or ethics......that's a personal opinion.

Your typical man weighs more than your typical whitetail. Are you saying the NAA sucks?

Lycan, I opined based on my morality and hunting ethics. I also said, "go for it". It's his hunt, not mine. Therefore, to be absolutely clear, I hope the OP enjoys hunting with his 7.62x39. If it rains, take some garbage bags to round out the Busch League approach - great disposable ponchos.

But, I'd never tell him to stop or approve of someone stopping him. Just wish that he'd Hunt with his 7mm.
