An active-duty Army soldier, on leave from Afghanistan for Christmas break, was shot and killed in Baltimore while on the way back from the grocery store with his wife late Sunday, police said.

Clifford Jamar Williams, 22, a private with the U.S. Army, was found in his vehicle in the 600 block of S. Wickham St., suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Anthony Guglielmi, the police department's chief spokesman.

Guglielmi said Williams and his wife were on the way back from the grocery store when an unknown suspect approached his vehicle and fired several rounds into the driver's side. Williams continued driving until he stopped the vehicle in the middle of the road, not far from his home, where he was discovered by police at about 11:56 p.m.

He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. Monday.

His wife, unharmed, was cooperating with investigators, Guglielmi said.

It was not clear what, if anything, provoked the shooting, and police were working to determine the precise location of the crime scene.

"He had a clean criminal record, and there is no evidence at this point to suggest that he was involved in any nefarious activity," Guglielmi said.

Williams was home for Christmas and was to turn 23 years old on Dec. 26.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Baltimore Police homicide unit at 410-396-2100.

Pretty horrible story. What makes it even worse is that he was killed at home while on a break from war. I'm not familiar with Baltimore neighborhoods, but he probably grew up in a war zone.

What a horrible thing... my thoughts and prayers are with his family, and most importantly, his wife.

This is sickening in many ways, but the worst is it happened in front of his wife.

Mr. Knight, I didn't want to be the first one to bring it up but I'll give some of my experiences of being in the Army the last 21 years.

Life Insurance for a soldier today is $450,000.00 not to mention all the VA benefits, the 100K within 48 hrs unrelated to the life insurance policy, etc...

After every deployment I've done, a spouse, has always been a female, conspired with a boyfriend to kill said husband as she expected him to die while in "COMBAT" cough cough, joke!!! Anyway, the fact that she was not hit while sitting in the car only makes me believe she was involved. Who would want to leave living eye witness? Just saying...

IF this young man was from Baltimore, who is to say that he was not involved in CRIME prior to enlisting and his former associates got pay back.

Within the last four years, many soldiers have enlisted who have openly stated to me that they were active gang members and joined to get out and can't go back to where they are from or they will be killed.

Who knows??? but yup, there is some stink on this for sure!

I am of the same mindset. I would love to see her phone records.

Be safe (and follow the money).

where he was discovered by police at about 11:56 p.m.
This is what gets me. Why was he discovered by police, didn't the wife call in to 911 to get her husband help? Where was the ambulance? Something really stinks about this.
