Default Officer Involved In Fatal Port Richmond Shooting(Update)

So I just saw the victims friend on TV tell what happened. The long short of it, the victim got into a fight with the off duty cop's son. They all live in the same neighborhood. The victim and the cops son fell to the ground while they were fighting. When they got up off the ground, the cop put his gun in the friend's face, and then pointed the gun at the victim's chest and shot him.

    PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ―

Philadelphia police are investigating a shooting involving an off-duty officer in Port Richmond that left one man dead.

According to police, the shooting occurred on the 2600 block of Elkhart Street.

Police Lt. Frank Vanore tells CBS3 that a large fight, involving 20 to 40 young people, broke out in the street at around 11 p.m.

When an off-duty officer, attending a family gathering nearby, attempted the break up the fight, he was assaulted and discharged his weapon once, striking a man in his chest.

The victim, 21-year-old William Panas of Cedar Street, was taken to Temple University Hospital by responding medics, he was pronounced dead at 11:33 p.m.

Philadelphia internal affairs, homicide and the district attorney's office are all investigating the shooting and the officer involved has been placed on desk duty, as is standard procedure for all police involved shootings.

According to family members of the victim, a vigil is being held at 5 p.m.

It sounds like the LEO in question is a total nutbag, what with a neighbor reportedly taking video of him shooting a possum at one point. Sounds like he has been a loose cannon and has done things that your or I would be in prison for even before he shot some kid.

I am hardly surprised that someone could get stressed enough to lose their shit like that, what with him being a Philly cop. Stressful job. Hopefully this will put a microscope to the PPD and perhaps weed out a few more folks who shouldn't be wearing a badge. At least than some good will come of this incident.

ABC just posted a video. They show this cop shooting a possum in front of his house with his service weapon. Nutty.

    Doesn't sound good.

It makes me sick when police circle the wagons around their own when a similar situation would almost certainly put a civilian in lockup.

A vigil will be held soon for the boy who was killed. I'll post details as I get them. Nobody is pleased at the PPD for their handling of this incident.

I'm sure the police and district attorney's office will fully investigate the matter and he is being treated the same as any of us would........
