Default Go ahead, make my day ... make it legal

One of our own made the local rag this morning.... and for a REALLY GOOD CAUSE too! Thanks Bill for speaking out for all of us

    http://www.mcall.com/news/local/week...,6324897.story

In April we introduced you to Bill Grumbine of Kutztown and his 16-year-old daughter, Emily. At the time, the father-daughter team were among the throngs of Second Amendment fans who flocked to Harrisburg to oppose Gov. Ed Rendell's efforts to slap limits on handgun ownership.

Thus, we were pleasantly surprised to see the Grumbines in the state Capitol pressroom Wednesday. Turns out they were in town to lobby on behalf of legislation authorizing the so-called Castle Doctrine here in Pennsylvania.

For those not in the know, the Castle Doctrine gives a person the right to use lethal force in their homes if they believe that their lives or the lives of innocent people in the home are in danger.

One highlight of the law is that it does away with what's known as the ''Duty to Retreat,'' which holds that the homeowner has to try to leave his residence or put up some nonviolent resistance before he can use lethal force.

In some circles, the law has been referred to as the ''Make My Day Law,'' which is intended, we presume, to evoke the image of a heavily armed populace blasting away merrily at the slightest hint of danger. ( ''Take that, Domino's deliveryman. That'll learn ya for being here in 31 minutes instead of 30! '').

''It will not encourage people to start blasting away,'' Grumbine said ''We don't want to see innocent people [getting] harmed.''

While he was here, Mr. Grumbine also re-extended his invitation to take us target-shooting one of these days before long. We'll let you content yourself with the potential hilarity of that image as we close for now.
