Stuck gas check, 30-30
I had to pull some bullets and the gas check stayed in the case. I don't have a needle nose that is small enough. Any suggestions on getting them out?

Re: Stuck gas check, 30-30
That's certainly an interesting situation, I've never considered it before.
But, maybe, if you laid the case on its side, pushed a dowell or metal rod into the case against the edge of the gas check, and forced the gas check to "fold" over, it would render it narrow enough to shake it out of the case.
I mean, that is my first thought, and may not represent the best solution, but gosh, you do have a problem.
Let us know what you do, both that which does work and that which does not.
How many cases do you have this way?

Could you use an inertia bullet puller to shake things loose?

Do you have a die for a larger caliber? Remove the decapping pin, bump the neck up and everything should fall out. Run them thru the 30-30 die and your back in business
Hemostats should be small enough to get in the neck but I don't know if that would let you pull the checks out or not.

Sometimes you can fish it out with the the end of of fence wire or thick paper clip bent into a small hook.

Re: Stuck gas check, 30-30
I had eight with the gas check stuck.
BINGO! I was looking around hoping to find something that I could use. I see a 5 inch piece of 12ga wire left over from my exaust work. I put a small 90 degree bend on the end(stripped of about 1/2 inch of insulation) and it was small enough to go around the check and strong enough to pull it out.
Thanks for the help.Last edited by shooter357; November 21st, 2009 at 10:38 PM.

Re: Stuck gas check, 30-30
I make them for 30 cal rifle only right now. I bought one of those Freechex tools off of flea bay ,He advertises using can alum. but one layer is way too thin(.004 avg.) I need and use a minimum of .012 alum. brass or copper or a combo of them to equal .012 or greater.
to make them first you cut out the disks, then place them in the die(female),put the forming punch(male)in and hit with a small hammer and out pops a formed check.
In my experience using them they are the equal of hornady in accuracy. They may not crimp on like hornady's but neither did the older lyman checks. My groups out to 200 yds which I routinely shoot are the same and I am no longer reliant on buying either bullets or checks for my shooting needs. Now if I could only make my own primers I'd be set!!!!!!
