Default LTCF, PA, AK, Canada, and Reciprocity questions.

First, I want to make sure I understand reciprocity.

According to the map, I can carry in any state that has a reciprocity agreement with PA with a PA LTCF. Likewise, if I were living in Alaska and had a LTCF from Alaska, I could legally carry in PA. Correct?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm considering moving to Alaska in a few years. I believe OC/CC is legal without a license in AK. I would have to get the license in order to carry in PA, however.

Here's the real question. My LCTF expires in 2011. Next year I'll be living in Canada. Do I need to be a current resident of PA in order to get a renewed LCTF? If not, would it be a no no to say I'm living with my parents, who live in PA? I will be living at home this summer so maybe I could renew it early?

    Thanks for any information.

IIRC, you cannot renew early. If you change your DL to something other than PA then you cannot get a resident LTCF but you can get a non-resident LTCF (go through the Centre County Sheriffs office, it's easiest).

If you have an AK LTCF (or whatever they call it) you can carry in PA.

Thanks for the help. While I'm in Canada I may or may not need to get a Canadian drivers license. Either way, I will keep my PA drivers license as it expires in 2013.

Regardless, being able to get a non-resident LTCF is my silver bullet.

You might want to research Canadian gun laws.

From what I understand, PRNJ, is a free state, compared to Canada.

have you figured out what you are going to do with your guns while you are living in canada?

from my understanding (which may be flawed), i think you have approximately a 0% chance of being able to legally take your handguns, at least, with you to canada.

I have been. In Canada, you need to pass an exam and apply for a license. The license is called the Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for rifles and shotguns over 16" in length and the Restricted Possession and Acquisition License (RPAL) for handguns. You don't need to be a Canadian citizen to get these licenses. Canada does allow concealed carry but less than 1% of those who apply actually get approved.

Still have to do this. If I have a US LTCF and a Canadian PAL/RPAL it should help things a lot. It's also possible to get a 60 day temporary license for people bringing rifles/shotguns into Canada. I doubt this applies to handguns.

Canada has restrictions. Barrel length of 4.1" or under is banned. The Glock 23 is banned by about 3 or 4 tenths of an inch (I think). It's not impossible to bring handguns over the boarder though.

What I find interesting is that you can buy Norinco rifles, HK rifles, IMI rifles (Tavor), etc. The AK series is banned along with Calico and other manufacturers. Mag sizes are limited to 10 (pistol), 5 (rifle), and unlimited (rimfire). The exception to this are antiques (M1 Garand, Enfields) and the AR15 which can accept 10 round 'pistol' mags.

In many ways, Canada has more firearms freedoms than the US. The big difference is that they (Canadians) don't have the freedom written down. There are firearms organizations in Canada trying to get guaranteed freedoms, however.
