What do you intend to use it for? I know a guy who bought a 460 Weatherby for whitetail.

It's a toss up as far as I'm concerned. 300 Mag is factory loaded in heavier bullets and you can get a a little more velocity so it may have a slight edge. I think either will do for your purposes and would look for what you can get a better deal on the rifle.

Depends on if you are gonna use bullets over 180gr or not, if you are then go with the 300win mag as when you use the short mag with bullets over 180gr you start to intrude on the powder capacity and then the benefit of the short mag becomes less.
besides there aint nothing the 300 short mag can do that the good ole' regular 300 win mag hasnt done.
It also depends on weather you want a short action rifle that is a few ounces lighter then the regular long action version.

My vote would go for the .300 win mag.

The 300 Win mag has been around for quite a while, is available at most hardware stores and is cheaper than 300WSM. The WSM may not catch on, is more expensive and rarer. If it were me, I’d go with a 30-06 or a 300 Win mag.

Six to one.....half dozen to the other.

With bonded or a Barnes X bullets you can easily kill elk with lighter bullet offerings.
