SCRANTON – This morning, Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty officially launched his campaign to be the next Pennsylvania governor.

Doherty is joining the Democratic race.

The announcement comes a week after Doherty was re-elected to a third term as mayor of Scranton. He made the announcement at 500 Lackawanna Ave., where the Renaissance at 500 development project to revitalize a section of downtown Scranton for residential, commercial and green space is under way.

A section of Lackawanna Avenue was closed to traffic as the announcement was made and nearly 100 supporters and construction workers at the development project gathered to hear the announcement.

Doherty said he chose that location for the announcement because it “epitomizes the success Scranton has seen over the last eight years and it can be a model for the type of success we’d like to see in Pennsylvania in the future years to come.”

“I have the recipe and the resume to bring these things to fruition in Pennsylvania as your next governor,” Doherty said.

Doherty assured that his administration will continue to manage city affairs while he campaigns for governor.

“My style of running the city has always been the same: I hire people; they run the departments; and we talk together all the time,” he said.

In September, news sources released information detailing the team that Doherty has assembled for the statewide campaign, which includes: Corey Platt, campaign manager; Julian Mulvey and Tad Devine, media; Margie Omero, polling; Steve Stenberg, mail; and Mark Nevins, communications.

Funds for the campaign have been held in a “Chris Doherty for PA” account he set up “several months ago.” Doherty declined to say how much has been raised.

Coming from a man who took over the city with a 2 or 3 million dollar surplus eight years ago and turned it into a $200+ million dollar debt. The city has been in distressed status for 18 years.

A man who hasn't given the police or the firemen in the city a raise in almost eight years. A city where the police officers buy their own cruisers and donate them to the city because the city won't provide them with a reliable vehicle.

The only people who will vote for him are Scranton residents, mostly hoping to get rid of him.
