Default Browning Hi-Power hammer drops with slide

Today, I spent a good 2 hours on the range and it was a gorgeous day. So when I was finished cleaning my Browning Hi-Power in .40 S&W I checked for function as I always do. My grip was putting upward pressure on the hammer and when I dropped the slide the hammer fell to half cock. It wasn't a fluke I repeated this several times. I've never noticed this happen before. Any ideas what could cause this? Any ideas on how to fix this or is it time to visit the gunsmith? Thanks for any help. Fred

Time to visit the gunsmith. I had the same thing happen to my CZ SP01 Phantom. Had to send it in for repair.

When you drop the slide forward keep the trigger depressed, as if you just shot the weapon. Check to see if the hammer still fall forward when you do this. Of course, MAKE SURE IT IS NOT LOADED!

To clarify, here is the procedure:

    1. Insure weapon is unloaded and pointed in a safe direction.
    2. Squeeze trigger
    3. Rack slide while holding trigger to the rear
    4. Observe.

When you do this, does the hammer fall to half cock?

In short the answer is yes. The hammer falls to half cock whether or not the trigger is depressed.

Make a trip to the gunsmith my friend, it is a function problem that needs to be fixed. it should not do that no matter what.

I can see it now. New commander hammer, dehorn, trigger job, cocobolo grips, one of those new super technical finishes. Who am I kidding, I can barely afford to get it fixed. We can all dream! Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Fred

had the same thing happen to my MKIII. It turned out to be a small kink in the mainspring from being dropped one too many times and landing on the cocked hammer. I simply removed the mainspring and straightened out the small kink by bending it the opposite way. that was about 1500 trouble free rounds ago.

    Rogue-
Are you referring to the main recoil spring, or the hammer spring?

    Thanks!

AAAAAAWWWWWWW................................. not as interesting of an outcome that i was hoping for.... lol....

My uncle had an older pistol (i forget the make and model ) that when the slide was sent forward, the hammer dropped..... NOT TO HALF COCK THOUGH lol

before the normal law groupies jump at me with their flamethrowers, he DID NOT, modify it to happen like this, it was just that old lol

My point, is that when you inserted the mag (only like seven or maybe one or two more.. sorry, been about three years ) pointed the pistol at your target, and hit the slide release and the fun began!!!!! it was like an instand (but much older with a much smaller mag) Glock 18

it wasn't that accurate in the least bit like that but it certainly was FUN!!!! lol

i was kinda hoping someone else had an experience like this... think i'm gonna start a thread to see if anyone has.......
