Re: NFA engraving ?? Harrisburg area
I am in the process of starting a laser engraving business. Is there a big need for custom engraving firearms? If so I will be sure to get the equipment to provide that service.

I don't know about custom engraving, but I need about 6 receivers done to ATF specs. My name, city and state.
Let me know when you are up and running please.

Yes, there are quite a few people looking for NFA engraving. When you get ready to open I would post here in the NFA section about the engraving. I am In Lebanon and a Title II dealer , so i will send some buisness your way this is what they require 1/16" high markings, and at least .003" deep

Re: NFA engraving ?? Harrisburg area
I definitely will let you guys know. The machine I am looking at now will accommodate items 18" long. Will this be long enough to accommodate your needs? Typically what type of metal would need engraved. Is it aluminum alloy or steel or something else?

Re: NFA engraving ?? Harrisburg area
I was just doing some research and it looks like I would have to have a license to do the engraving work. ATF site says I would be considered a gunsmith. Hum got to love the legal stuff. I will do more checking, maybe renting laser time to someone with a license would be ok.

As far as I understand in that case, you could still do laser engraving on all firearm parts with the exception of the frame/receiver (the actual "firearm"). This is what the NFA engraving would be, so that would be out... but you could engrave slides and other parts.
Are you looking to do mainly one-off type stuff or more batch production? It'd be nice to know a person/company in the area that has a laser engraver.

Re: NFA engraving ?? Harrisburg area
I'm also looking for someone in Lancaster or Harrisburg that can do it. Everywhere I have spoken with is quoting at least $100. Maybe it's just me but a cheap set of letter/number stamps and a couple minutes on the mill to make a support fixture is sounding better by the minute.
Greg Peck, while you were looking at the atf page, did you see any info stating that you had to be a gunsmith if the individual was present with you while you did the machine work? I have never looked into the matter. Just curious...

Someone with more knowledge on the matter would have to chime in, but there may be a way to legally have your NFA info engraved without him being licensed (you being present the entire time, "selling" it and "buying" it back when it's finished, paying for a decorative logo or similar and him engraving the NFA info free of charge, etc.)
I don't know all the ins and outs of engraving the receiver, but I was just mentioning any restrictions wouldn't apply to the other parts of the firearm.
