Default 31.480 million spent per job, and it failed

WASHINGTON (AP) - An early progress report on President Barack Obama's economic recovery plan overstates by thousands the number of jobs created or saved through the stimulus program, a mistake that White House officials promise will be corrected in future reports.

The government's first accounting of jobs tied to the $787 billion stimulus program claimed more than 30,000 positions paid for with recovery money. But that figure is overstated by least 5,000 jobs, according to an Associated Press review of a sample of stimulus contracts.

The AP review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two and sometimes more than four times; and other jobs were credited to stimulus spending when none was produced

I have a feeling its been over-inflated by closer to 15,000 - 20,000 as almost all the jobs that were created are on "projects" which are temporary positions which will vanish when the project is done, including the "trickle down" work... ie steel for bridges, asphalt, rock... etc

once the highway projects are done we are back to where we were... just much poorer

This is what kills me about government. IF these numbers are true why not just send everybody a million dollar check and be done with it?

Works out to about $2,580 per resident of the U.S. based on a population of305 million.

That number needs to be based upon the current number of taxpayers, not total population. The latest number I found was for the end of 2008: 156.3 million. That would give $5034.54 per taxpayer (with change left over). Obviously we would need to recalculate based upon up-to-date taxpayer numbers.

That 5 thousand per taxpayer isn't right. Lets say there are 160 million taxpayers, give them each a million dollars and you have spent only 160 million dollars. Give them each 5 million dollars and you have only spent 800 million. Divide 787 billion by 160 million and you get 4918.75. What's that mean - almost 5 billion per taxpayer, not thousand. I think?

check your math... its WAY off

IF there are 160,000,000 tax payers and you give them each 1,000,000 dollars... how does it end up with you spending 160,000,000?

you would spend 160,000,000,000,000 or 160 Trillion.

I'm not picky though... I'll settle for letting me actually HAVE my paycheck instead of giving it away to people... I'd rather keep that 30%+ that I lose every friday then get a handout from the gov

Actually, you are incorrect. 160,000,000 taxpayers * $1,000,000.00 is $160trillion. My number was slightly off, but only by a few dollars:

    $787,000,000,000.00 / 156,300,000.00 = $5035.18874
