Re: Magnus Bullets
Update guys, I bought these bullets in the 125 grn for my 9mm sigma.
here's the load data.
4.3, 4.5 and 4.6 grn HP-38 None of these loads opened up the bullet, it didn't even start. For some reason the chrony didnot measure either.
I put them threw 5 water filled milk jugs for the test and put a piece of plywood as a stopper.
the 4.3 ended up in the fifth jug. the other two made it through all five.
I guess I bought target bullets that look good.Last edited by tdt91; February 25th, 2010 at 08:04 AM.

Re: Magnus Bullets
this is the response I got from Magnus. I didn't chrono them so I don't know if they were fast enough.
They should open up at 1100-1200 ft/sec loads.
What is the load you used and the gun, model, barrell etc.?GET THE NET !!!

Re: Magnus Bullets
From the Hodgdon website: http://www.hodgdon.com/shotpist.html
HP38 is a spherical powder that is great for low velocity and mid-range target loads in the .38 Special, .44 Special, and 45 ACP. This high energy powder provides economy in loading. Available in 1 lb., 4 lb. & 8 lb. containers.
The Lyman manual lists velocities for 124/125 gr Jacketed bullets from 930 to 1163 fps, and does not even list HP-38 as a common choice. AA#7 is their preferred "accuracy loading", and at maximum loading, velocity is only 1119 fps. They list maximum velocity of 1161 fps with Blue Dot, an Alliant powder of much slower burning rate.
HP-38 is "22" on the burning rate chart (out of 177) and Blue Dot is #60, for whatever that is worth.
So it would appear that you have a bit of a mis-match there, and should not expect too much expansion from the bullets in question. If you were firing them out of a carbine, your results may be nearer expectations, but from a pistol, it would appear that you will only get marginal result.
That is where loading manuals are such a help, and when you have the manufacturer's specifications for the bullets, you can more accurately plan for or predict the outcome.
It is a shame your chrono didn't capture these velocities. You would be enlightened, I am sure, by the result.

Re: Magnus Bullets
Flash, it sounds as though I should get some blue dot as this powder will give me the best velocity without over pressure.
I knew that HP-38 was not the optimal powder for 9mm but that was all I could get from the store I was at when I started reloading. didn't want to wait.

Re: Magnus Bullets
I've been using Magnus 45 ACP and 9 MM bullets for several years. Their JHPs are similar to Hornady XTPs but at a much lower price. At first I was skeptical so I weighed each bullet and found them very consistent. Their copper jackets are not as thick as Hornady, but they peel back and still stay attached.
I reload just a few cartridges - 45 ACP, 40 S&W, 10 MM Norma, 9 MM, 380 ACP, 30-06 Springfield and 243 Winchester.
