Default Any other Scout rifle fans? New Savage Scout - w/ pics

Thinking that Colonel Jeff Cooper must have known what he was talking about, I decided to get a scout rifle. My dealer had to look around a bit for one, but he located one in time for me to get it ready for hunting season. I don't have the Cooper specified 'ching sling', (my rifle came with only two sling swivels).

I don't plan to keep the bipod on it, for weight savings. I just used the bipod to help hold the rifle when I mounted the scope.

I'm hoping this will be an accurate .308 rifle out to 400 yards or so. Scope is a fixed 2.75 x Burris Scout Scope.

Thoughts on the Scout rifle? Your experiences with Scout rifles, for hunting, or otherwise?

    Thanks

Sorry about the lousy pics, hopefully I can get some better ones later.

That is a nice rifle indeed. Check out this months American Rifleman, they debunk the need for tedious "break in" rifle cleaning regimen. Are there plans for a range report???

I'll have to check out the AR report about break in.

Range report will be forthcoming, if the rain breaks long enough for me to get out there and shoot.

I have a mini30 that I shortened the barrel to 16 1/4 inches and put a long rail on.I mounted a 2 power pistol scope on it.I also have a M1a scout that I have yet to put an optic on and may not.I just got a Marlin 1894 41mag that I'm going to put a reciever sight and scout rail on with some kind of optic.I definitely like the idea.I want to get a bolt gun something like the savage or ruger frontier.

When Cooper was touting the Scout Rifle concept he used converted Remington and Mauser rifles. He finally got the Steyr company to make their Scout rifle and shortly there after Savage introduced their Scout.
Everything I read had the Colonel disapproving of the more pedestrian Savage rifle which cost about 1/3 of what the Steyr cost. There were also hints and innuendo that the Savage rifles were inaccurate and prone to misfeeding, things you don't normally hear about Savage's other rifles.

I passed on buying several Scout rifles and now wish that I had snatched one up. I'll be interested to read how your rifle does. It is a sweet looking rig.

I've got a Marlin 1895 .45/70 with a 1.5x Leupold scope mounted Scout style, it's very quick and accurate to shoot under 2" at 100 yards. Plenty good enough for what I'd hunt with this type rifle.

I've been hunting with a scout for the last 10 years or so. I made up two of them; one on a ruger m77 mkII in 308 and the other for woodchucks on a Kimber .22.

Both rifles shoot way under m.o.a. I never had much luck selling the concept to customers, probably because it doesn't 'look' like a scoped rifle should.

Like Jeff Cooper observed, "advanced thinking is slow to catch on"

well according to ATI, the stock i put on the Mauser is a "scout stock". even tho its now setup for long range deer killing.

i might swap back on the original stock and go with the scout setup later on after hunting season.

Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.
