A municipal government could try. None have and it would be unlikely to be successful.

Read Footnote 9 of that unfortunate case; a local government can't use its grant of government power to criminalize possession of firearms anywhere, but that's not the end of the inquiry. You don't have to go out of your way to look for the stupid "gun free zone" signs, but if asked to leave by the owner or its agent, you have to leave. And if the signs are obvious and ubiquitous, you may have other potential hazards.

The potential is there, and there is a PA Superior Court ruling stating such.

Question about school grounds, if a non school event uses a High School football field for a sitting area (fireworks in this case) is that field a prohibited carry area even though it's a non-school function?

The statute makes no exclusions, exceptions, or exemptions for how the property is used.
While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

The statute prohibits carry on school grounds. If the football field is separated from the school by a public roadway, it's not school grounds but merely school property.

However, the recent Commonwealth v. Goslin decision in Pennsylvania Superior Court (https://princelaw.files.wordpress.co...d_remanded.pdf) now makes the carry of firearms for lawful purposes a lawful defense.
