Does an unloaded long gun HAVE to be in your trunk?

It depends on the situation. Can you be more specific in your question?

More specifically, if I am transporting a long gun can it be in my back seat or front seat if it is clearly unloaded and not easily and readily loaded? Or must it be locked in the trunk?

Legally it can be anywhere in the vehicle. Under your trench coat, laying across the dash, in a gun rack in the back window, etc, etc.

Although, there are a couple times where there is a minor requirement to have the gun in a case. But for the most part - pretty much anywhere is game for long guns.

Just to narrow that down a bit.....within PA, outside of Philadelphia, an unloaded long gun can be anywhere in the vehicle, and no LTCF is required.

Crossing state lines, and you're subject to the laws of that state. To comply with the Federal preemption, it has to be unloaded and in the trunk or in a locked container other than your glove box or console (it wouldn't fit in those anyway.)

In Philly, you need an LTCF just to have any gun in public, unless an exception applies.

Plus, you have the issue of school zones, Federal property, prohibited persons...

Nobody ever said that the gun laws would make sense, or be easy to figure out.

I guess the Philadelphia PD arrests you for legally transporting an unloaded long gun in the back seat and figures you won't have the guts to sue them for violating the Uniform Firearms Act?

Not exactly. Gunlawyer is referring to this state law:
18 Pa.C.S. § 6108: Carrying firearms on public streets or public property in Philadelphia
No person shall carry a firearm, rifle or shotgun at any time upon the public streets or upon any public property in a city of the first class unless:
    (1) such person is licensed to carry a firearm; or
    (2) such person is exempt from licensing under section 6106 of this title (relating to firearms not to be carried without a license).
Philly is PA's only "city of the first class".

Well, I do have a LTCF. Bucks County is really good about issuing them.

Its frightening to see how many here have so little grasp of the immense importance of private property rights - whether pertaining to RTC or whatever else.

Is this site infected with trolls - anti-gun progressives/liberals/socialists/communists - or, does this simply reflect the abject failure our union-run, public educational system represents in its intentional/negligent refusal to teach US/world history, philosophies of basic government and law and the blessing/genius of the US Constitution (et al)?

Jeesh! Not to mention, critical thinking skills!

Yeah. "Frightening" is the word to use (although terrifying fits the bill, as well)!
