    Default I Need Fishing Help!

Well, I a no more a fisherman the the Gorton's guy, but my 2 boys wanna go to the lake. Do I need a license or can I just help them get fish off the hook, etc...I don't really wanna spend money on a fish license because I don't really fish...but I do want my kids to experience fishing! They are 8 and 10 and we will be going to Keystone State Park Lake. Any insight from you fishing guru's would be great!

I hate to tell you this but if you touch the equipment or the fish then you have to have a license if you are on a public waterway. The expense of the license is cheap insurance compared to the price of the ticket for fishing without a license.

your kids are young enough that they won't need a license, but if you're going to be taking the fish of the hook and what not, you'll need a license...... much cheaper than if you ever get fined that's for sure - just get a license and do some fishing yourself........... it's quite relaxing and inexpensive........... or, you can fish on private property and you should be all good.........

Is it an urban legend when people say that its not recommended to eat wild-caught fish more than once a month, given the amount of mercury and other nasties in the water?

You can not eat more than...I forget how many...fish out of lake Erie due to mercury. Taht is fact and published information. Trout on the otherhand I don't know. I've never eaten more than a couple every couple months.

To the OP, there are a few days the Fish Comission lets you fish without a license ( to take kids etc). I bet if you look around the fish/game comissions site you can find that info..

    My take:

It's a F'n rip off to get a license. It cost almost $40 for me to get one so I can take my son fishing....

According to the pa fish and boat website you do not need a license to help your children.
    19. Do I need a fishing license to take my young child fishing?
An adult who assists a child by casting or retrieving a fishing line or fishing rod is not required to possess a valid fishing license provided that the child remains within arms’ reach of the assisting adult and is actively involved in the fishing activity.
An adult may assist a child by baiting hooks, removing fish from the line, netting fish, preparing the fishing rod for use and untangling the line without possessing a valid fishing license.

It all depends on the waterway and the species. There are some waterways where you should limit anything caught out of it. For many though, it is only relevant for a few species.

Don't be so cheap, buy a license and take the kids fishing. Might find out you will like fishing. Bob

Thats what I thought...but I will probably still get a license just to be safe. However, it will cut into my gun/ammo funds!
