I'm a fan of the SPS Varmints. I bought two, one in .308 and .223. Both shot well out of the box. Upgraded the stocks to Hogue pillar bedded and they became tack drivers. The .223 shoots .23" at 100, and less than 5/8" at 200 yards. Haven't wrung out the .308 yet, but it's just over 1" at 200 with FGMM.

I bought a 700P in .223 at the Harrisburg show, so the .223 will probably be for sale soon SWMBO says duplicate guns for same application is a no-no

CZ 527 Varmint in 204 Ruger. The Varmint only weighs one pound more than the stock "walk around" 527 American but has a varmint barrel. Mine shoots under 1/2 at 100 yards with handloads.

The 22-250 is a great round. The 204 does the same with less powder, less kick (you can watch the round hit the target), and I'm told it does not heat up the barrel as much as the 22-250.

The Remington XR100 is very good choice. The only way to get better is a custom rifle by a good gunsnith or a Remington custom shop XB40. The rifle is only one of the parts of a good system. The scope/mounta are just as important as the proper ammo. As far as the caliber, if you don't handload look at the number of choices and if the stuff will be around in the future.

I have both of these rifles in several configurations. All shoot very accurately, have walnut stocks, fantastic single set triggers ( not found in any rifle in this class), excellent workmanship and quality, reasonable prices.
CZ 527 in .17 Rem. .223 Rem, .204 Ruger. All will do what is needed for a given range. If you are not into handloading go with the .223. The others need to be handloaded to realize their full potential.
Another choice if you want to go a litle bigger is the CZ 550 in .22-250, .308, or 6.5X55. Same great quality, accuracy, etc, as the 527, only a larger action.

I have 2 different .220 swifts. Both are very accurate with handloads. I have a ruger m77 mkII heavy barrel that i use the most. I can usually put 5 shots off the bench that either touch or nearly touch at 100yds. The other is a model 70 pre64 heavy barrel stainless. I only shoot this gun 2-3 times a year once to sight it in and once or twice to shoot some groundhogs. As far as recommending a gun, if you are shooting less than 400yds I believe that a ruger remington or winchester will all be fine in most any varmint cal. My father has a winchester 22-250, a browning .223 and a few others and they all do well for varmints. Once you get over 400yds my guns might do ok but I'm not that good, yet. Maybe one day. Good luck.

Take a look at these... I haven't shot one but have heard nothing but good things.
