    Default Any advantages to a Centre County CCW over other counties?

    I am a PA resident and already hold a CCW in my home county (Cumberland). I keep reading about Centre County non-resident CCWs and would like to know if there's any advantages of having a CCW from Centre County over the one I already have in Cumberland County? I would have thought a CCW from any PA county would be as good as any other county. True or not?

    As a PA resident you may only get a LTCF from the county you reside in.

    Sheriffs do not have to issue non-resident licenses. Some won't do it at all, some require you to do it in person. The Sheriff of Centre county accepts applications by mail. That's why a lot of Non resident LTCFs are issued from Centre County.

    Your Cumberland County LTCF is valid throughout PA.

    An LTCF is an LTCF. No one is different than any other across the Commonwealth. Each county sheriff does his/her own thing when issuing an LTCF, but there is no difference with the actual LTCF.

    I respectfully disagree with that statement. According to the UFA, sheriffs are required to issue a LTCF to qualified out-of-state residents. True, some choose not to, but they are in violation of statute.

    Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms Act
    18 Pa.C.S. § 6109: Licenses

    (e) Issuance of license.--
    (1) A license to carry a firearm shall be for the purpose of carrying a firearm concealed on or about one's person or in a vehicle and shall be issued if, after an investigation not to exceed 45 days, it appears that the applicant is an individual concerning whom no good cause exists to deny the license. A license shall not be issued to any of the following:
    <snip>

    (ix) A resident of another state who does not possess a current license or permit or similar document to carry a firearm issued by that state if a license is provided for by the laws of that state, as published annually in the Federal Register by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms of the Department of the Treasury under 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(19) (relating to definitions)

    I stand corrected. I guess since a lot of the sheriffs refuse to do it, I assumed they weren't breaking the law... My mistake.

    Thanks for the citation

    The main advantages to getting a CCW permit in Centre County is that Sheriff Nau is very pro 2A, the people are in the office very nice to deal with and for an additional $1, they'll laminate you a wallet sized copy of your permit. Not that any of these are compelling reasons, but they make it very easy to get a CCW if you're not a criminal.
