Default Free at home Glock modification

This is a quick mod to a Glock, or any pistol with a blued barrel that you can do with a few things right from your kitchen cabinet. Some guns dont use a bright stainless metal in their barrels so they will not shine. After only a few hundred rounds we all know what happens to the blued finish of our barrels right around the ejection port. Although I like the look of a proven firearm I tried this to one of my guns and now I do it to most. All you need to do is soak the barrel in vinegar for a few hours. Then dip it in a glass of water and baking soda to neutralize the acid. Using a good metal gun brush you can easily get the blueing off. I do the inside too but obviously you dont need to. Finally using a good metal polish simply rub it on and buff it off a few times until you get the shine you want. Besides the soak time the whole project takes less than an hour. The barrel shines more than I can get my camera to show and an extra bonus feature is that it makes the bore look bigger than it is so if you are looking down the gun from the wrong end even a 9 mil like this one looks pretty huge.

This one is not mine but the guy who first told me about this. I realized I did not take a pic of the slide retracted on my gun.

How does it hold up to corrosion?
Is the bluing or tenifer now gone and will it rust with sweat and humidity?

Stainless steel does not rust. The blueing is for looks only on this one. Tennifer is what coats the slide, not the barrel.

Actually stainless steel only resists rusting, it can still rust. Also, how do you know the factory glock barrels are stainless?

(Forgive me if its in the manual, I haven't read mine in quite a while and I'm not about to dig it out now.)

the tennifer process is applied to the barrel as well as the slide.

it is a treatment that actually changes the metal itself...not very deep, but it is a treatment that chances the properties of the steel, not a coating.

so, debluing the barrel should not effect the corrosion resistance...unless whatever is used to deblue it also effects the molecular structure of the metal (or removes a couple thousands of an inch of steel).

Interesting. How does this hold up? I don't think all pistols would like this for corrosion issues.

it would likely hold up fine in a glock due to the nature of the tenifer process (see my post above).

it would not likely hold up on a pistol with a non-stainless barrel that relies on the bluing for rust prevention.

Such a easy way to do it! Thanks!

But I think I might stick with stock for a while since I like mine all black.
