Default Vacation spots within reasonable driving distance?

The fiance and I just got back from Williamsburg, VA and we're already looking to plan another vacation, probably in May of next year.

Any suggestions for good places? 10 hours or so one way would be the max drive we'd be willing to make. (Wililamsburg was roughly 6)

depends on what you are looking for, i suppose.

imho, pretty much the entire state of west virginia is a great vacation destination (all kinds of fun outdoor activities)...and they honor PA LTCFs and have good carry laws.

I vote for more information. You looking for an Ocean City MD kind of place or a Stone Harbor NJ kind of place?

The Cape or Nantucket is nice... Chatham is a great little town out on the Cape check out the Chatham Bars Inn. The Homestead in Hot Springs Va is nice. The Outer Banks is fun. Charleston SC is also a great southern city...

These are mostly "the journey is the reward" rather than just destinations.

    Adirondacks in NY

Up Rt 7 through western CT and MA to VT then over to NH. Lake Champlain, Green Mountains, White Mountains, Mount Washington. Best in early Oct, but pretty when the trees are leafing out too.

Coastal MA (Gloucester & Rockport) then up the ME coast. Monhegan Island is a fun day or overnight trip. Camden/Rockport is neat. Push on to Acadia/Mt Desert.

Wine/Horse country in the Virginia piedmont between DC and Front Royal. Down Skyline Drive and then the Blue Ridge Parkway to Ashville, NC. Great Smoky Mountains NP.

I haven't done it yet my self, but Rt6 across the northern tier of PA

used to do that all the time when i was a kid living in st. marys and we would go visit relatives in factoryville.

beautiful drive...lots of neat little weird things to stop and visit along the way, too, if you are into that kind of thing.

if i remember correctly, there is a coal mining museum where you actually go down into an old coal mine, a lumber museum, etc. somewhere along that route.

Beaches aren't really my thing. Things we loved about Williamsburg and the surrounding area were the historical sites, the scenery, the food, and the friendly folks.
