Default Officer-involved Domestic Violence (OIDV): Meleanie Isn't Alone

    Slide-show: http://policedomesticviolence.com/OF...FATALITIES.htm

When I was a kid, my parents (more my mom) had a friend whose husband was a state trooper. They were involved in a messy marriage that was going badly, and he had decided to try and cut her off by scaring away anyone who would have contact with her. Getting phone records, he started calling around and harassing whoever was on the other end of the line with what we thought were ridiculous threats. One day, it was our turn, and it was me who answered the phone in my parents' absence.

While Bonnie managed to get away from her out-of-control husband, many don't, and they and their friends can pay a terribly high price for what an abusive husband (or wife, and not always the one with the badge) sees as willful insolence. Meleanie died as a result of OIDV, something that is aided from time to time by the "wall of blue," the tendency of some LEOs to overlook or discount unforgivable behavior on the part of their own.

Sad! They almost all kill themselves after committing their acts of violence... How someone could harm their own children? I have a really hard time understanding that side of it...

I've been thinking about this issue since I heard about Meleanie. Domestic violence is scary enough when it doesn't involve LEOs. But it must be harder to get help when the abuser is part of the organization that is supposed to help.
