Re: What is a good round for turkey hunting?
For fall turkey I have used many different caliber rifles with different results. When i first started using a rifle for fall turkey I used a .22 Hornet with great results at varying distances out to around 100yds. Then I got a .17 HMR and had about a 50percent 1 shot kill ratio out to about 100yds. I moved on to a .22 WMR and found this to produce 1 shot kills about 25 percent more of the time that the smaller .17 HMR. Now for 2 seasons I have decided to hunt a very large field area with a .223 and had fantastic results. Last year I took a large gobbler at 185 yards and he went right down. Much better performance from the .223.

Re: What is a good round for turkey hunting?
I've bagged fall birds w/ 22 long rifle out to 100-120 yards. I was using Remington Yellow Jackets. I now have a 22 mag and plan on using 33 grn rem premiers. I've shot one w/ a 223 at about 60 yards and never got the bird, musta passed right thru. 55 grn sft pts

Re: What is a good round for turkey hunting?
I do not have a Turkey Barrel for my Shotguns believe it or not and i have four shotties, the reason i asked about the Rifle is that i could use it to take other small game while i'm Turkey hunting being that the seasons overlap somewhat. But i am in the Market for a semi auto shotty inexpensive but reliable such as a CD, tristar, Smith & wesson, etc.. Untill Walll'ys bring back the Berreta A390's in stock.
I'm thinking of using my Marlin 983 ba in .22 mag loaded with the 33 grn CCI maxi mag, this set up is deadly accurate out to 85 yards in my hands.
I see you had good results with the .22 mag.
Thanks , Nyman

Re: What is a good round for turkey hunting?
Provantage i think the 223 v max would be too harsh on Turkey, perhaps a Black Hills 52 grn softpoint would be better in .223.
In Texas they use rifles a lot for Turkey.
On www.rimfirecentral.com there is a guy from scotland that uses a rifle for birds, he suggests shooting a bird from thraight through the chest from front to out the back end to prevent damage to the breast meat rather than shooting the bird sideways.

Re: What is a good round for turkey hunting?
I shot a turkey last year with 22 mag /33gr rem prem. At about 75yds ,it blew a hole that I could put my fist thru. 33s are very accurate in my gun but to explosive if you want meat.
