    Default 1911 into battery....

    If I were to take an unloaded 1911 with the slide locked back as if I just fired my last and then inserted a loaded magazine, should I be able to "sling shot" it into battery or do I need to use the slide release?

    Either should work, if you do it properly.

    d90king pointed out to me, the other day, that some Les Baer's are so tight initially, that they won't slingshot. NHC advises to use the slide release, but they will slingshot.

    What make/ model are you asking about? 99% should work both ways.

    Both methods are acceptable. Using the slide release is recommended.

    I will note that if you are using a shock buffer in your 1911, it probably won't slingshot.

    When I took a pistol course in NY, they wanted you to sling shot the slide when reloading. The idea behind this is, if you need to clear a jam or misfire, the operation of racking the slide is more natural and ingrained into muscle memory.

    I've also heard this;
    If you always use the slide release and get into a SHTF situation that you need to reload, if your rushing you could hit the slide release before the mag is fully inserted and now you have an empty chamber and won't know it until you pull the trigger.

    In addition, the slingshot method saves wear and tear on the slide release as well as on your thumb depressing said slide release. And you don't have to shift grip to do that.

    Just another little weight on one of those 2 million opinions. Do we have time, space, and bandwidth for a fraction of those? Go ahead, I'll read on . . .. . . .

    When I slam the magazine into my Springfield 1911(since I put on an extended slide release) it automatically releases the slide and chambers the first round. If I don't slam it in it stays back until I release it.

    I like the option, I can reload and get back to shooting wicked fast.
