Black Powder
Hey guys, I'm new to the forum (and just getting into black powder shooting) and have two questions about black powder. First, I was wondering what the maximum amount of black powder a resident of PA is allowed to store in their home without a powder magazine, as I was considering buying it in bulk. Additionally, I was wondering what constitutes a powder magazine needed for storing any amount of powder over the legal limit.
Thanks Guys,
Big Mike
P.S. Since I'm new here, I didn't know where to post this so I posted it here and under Q&A...Sorry for the repetition!

Re: Black Powder
Welcome!
I haven't studied this in a while, but I recall the legal limit (Federal) is 25 pounds before you're required to use a powder magazine. And, there may be a licensing requirement (application link). One of the links (below) implies a 50 pound exemption.
I don't shoot daily, but it takes me a -long- time to run through a pound of powder. Unless you're feeding a cannon, you shouldn't need anywhere near 25 lbs.

Re: Black Powder
i did shoot daily it took me a while to burn through a pound.
they'res really no reason to have more than 3-4 pounds on hand at any time, unless you happen to have a magazine. it's not really something you want to have awhole lot of in your house.
a pound of powder is equal to 7000 grains, the average powder charge in a rifle is 70 grains.
that's about 100 shots per pound.
100 shots from a muzzleloader is a lot of work. it took me about an hour to deliver 10-12 well aimed shots.
and welcome to black powder shooting.Last edited by brian; July 4th, 2007 at 01:34 PM.
