You're not alone. My lab only walks down the steps of the pool, no swimming. Loves to fetch and retrieve but if the ball goes in the pool she'll wait until it gets near the edge before getting it. She will cool herself off by standing in the water but will not swim.

Now creeks and the ocean are different. She'll run into that stuff no problem.

And I had the only dog who hated to ride in a car. Also when I'd have my gun out to clean on the kitchen table he would run to the bed room and not come out until I put the gun away. And if he was in the other room all I had to do was cock the hammer and he'd go running. He was never around when I fired my gun. Rumor had it that his mother was shot and half of litter made it to a farm where a woman took care of strays until someone adopted them. It's in their genes, if you researched it I'd bet your dog witnessed a drowning or somewhere in the "line" dogs were drowned.

Our Rotti hates rain. If we take him out he will actually jump over puddles and running water instead of walking through it.

Our yellow lab hated water. So much so that she only got about 4 baths in her almost 9 years. It was a good thing she never smelled bad. Otherwise it woulda been a nightmare.

My previous black lab was afraid of gun shots. He would crawl under the car everytime the gun went off. Suffices to say he did not make a very good hunting dog...

My yellow male fell into the pool as a little pup. After that, he really didn't want anything to do with it. Then we adopted a yellow female. She is a true water dog. When the male saw her hit the pool he dropped his head, looked at me with a aw crap look and walked into the pool at the steps. He swam out into the shallow end a couple times and decided maybe it wasn't such a bad deal afterall. Now he launches off the side into the water every chance he gets... Funny how even a dog can have male pride.
