Re: Subsonic .22lr ?
1) They are quieter than a supersonic 22, but definitely not enough for somebody that close to not notice. .22 CB's are better for that (sounds like a loud BB gun), but pack a lot less punch.
2) Subsonics will work in a standard 22, but might not cycle a semi.
Also, be sure to check your local laws/ordinances about shooting on your property, and make sure you have a proper backstop. Both of those rounds will travel pretty far.Last edited by jokusfocus; March 13th, 2010 at 04:14 PM.

Re: Subsonic .22lr ?
For super quiet, this is what you want:

Pay no attention to the "handgun only" BS. They work fine in a rifle. Just make sure that they clear the muzzle.
If you need a bit more punch, CBs are the way to go.
For a bit more punch (more than a CB), give these a try:

All of these are sub-sonic.Soap Box - Worn out : Ballot Box - Broken : Jury Box - Pending : Ammunition Box - Unknown

Re: Subsonic .22lr ?
Granted, I've only ever used them in 2 semi .22s (a Marlin 70 rifle and Ruger MkII pistol), but I never had issues with them cycling. Maybe just good luck on my part? Out of curiousity, what guns did they fail to cycle in for you? Also, what brand did you use? Mine were Remington; maybe they were loaded a little hotter than other brands though.

Re: Subsonic .22lr ?
Back in the 70's CCI manufactured "MINIGROUP" which was subsonic out of pistols. It was economical, and particularly accurate. I shot cases of it from my Hi-Standard's in matches and practice. It never failed to cycle with reliability. I wish they still made it.

Re: Subsonic .22lr ?
Subsonic is very good when used with a suppressor. Not all subsonic ammo is the same, so try out as many subsonic loads as you can find when used with a suppressor.
If you want backyard quiet, you need to get a suppressor or try those Aguila Super Colibri. I've never used the Super Colibri, but I hear they work pretty well.
IMO, your best bet is to get a suppressor because they are awesome and a lot of fun.

Re: Subsonic .22lr ?
I used CB's on rabbits and squirrels in the garden when we lived in the down town area, I fired from inside the house on the second floor down to the ground. Backstop was never a problem and at the range of only a few yards leathality was ensured. Just check your local rules and regs.
But like others have said, they are not quite enough for some body only 50yds away to not hear it at all. But when fired from inside thru an open window, the sound does not travel thru walls.3%
