Dangerous Window About to Open?
Looking forward to the 2010 elections, I see the possibility that a very dangerous window could be opened. There exists a good possibility that the composition of the Congress could dramatically change and by composition, I mean, the number of D's and R's is less important than the intent of the new members.
If the composition of the Congress does changes significantly, the time from the election to the seating of the new Congress could be seen by the current administration as the last opportunity to drive "change". Obama will become a lame duck, single term President, and certainly there would be a flurry of legislative activity to advance his agenda as a last ditch effort to implement his vision before the new members are seated.
This could also be the time that extraordinary events could be used for extraordinary actions by the administration. Just because the free citizens win at the ballot box doesn't mean we are out of the woods, yet.

Politicians all need to remember, and I believe it has crossed their minds frequently lately, that even after they leave office, their "sins" will follow them. Retribution can occur at any time, and not just to them, but to children and grandchildren. America is pissed off right now, and i wouldn't want to be a politician who runs afoul of a people with our grand history of righting wrongs!
I wonder sometimes if Arlen 'Turncoat' Spector has ever thought about the fact that his grandchildren will forever be saddled with his indiscretions and misdeeds while sucking at the public tit.
I truly believe that Washington has gone too far and we could (probably will) see heads on pike poles if they don't straighten themselves out soon. Perhaps it is what this nation needs.

It never does. Far too many people in this country (not you) seem to believe we are free as long as we can vote for our oppressors. Not true. We are only free if there are limitations on government. “If you don’t like it then vote them out” is not a sufficient mechanism to ensure freedom.

Right there, you just in a very short statement gave the very reason for the existence of the Second Amendment! The shame is that most politicians don't realize that THIS is the very reason it exists. So that we may, when unable to remove bad politicians and tyrranical government by voting it into oblivion, can kill them and it. Thje truth is, if they realized that it's very existence is primarily and supremely for this very purpose, they wouldn't be acting the way they are!

It's not the best mechanism at the moment but it's the only one we can use without full out revolution.
But it's not just the Constitution and Bill of Rights that mentions these things. It's in the Declaration of Independence as well.

They do understand we can "shoot them out if we can't vote them out". That is the very reason they want to take the guns. Gun control is not about protecting our city streets, it's about them getting hurt while on a power trip.
The problem they have is most people will not resort to guns because we were taught to love and respect our flag, country and Constitution. And they are working hard to foster a hate for those very things.
You can't teach young people to hate the very things that are keeping them from hurting you.

Gun control is an approach they use, but the far more significant approach is the enormous standing military, the alphabet soup federal agencies, and para-military police organizations. It's hard to shoot them out if they can shoot back with superior firepower.
The police agencies don't even try to hide the fact that they are para-military organizations.

Before it gets to guns, a constitution and bill of rights are pretty good mechanisms for limiting the powers of government. Unfortunately our government has decided over time that these things do not apply to them. And our population did not stayed on top of them during the 20th century.
I would never advocate any violent revolution in this country. But from an academic standpoint, about 10,000 people almost handed the US Military their asses in Iraq. Politically speaking, that is, and war is indeed politics by other means. A popular uprising would succeed in the US. But that's not going to happen. A factional uprising, well, depends on how popular. And I certainly hope that's not going to happen.
