Default Pittsburgh city council passes AWB

Council tentatively approves G20 crowd-control measures
    Wednesday, September 09, 2009
    By Rich Lord, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh City Council voted 6-1 today for an ordinance allowing police to cite people for carrying pipes, gas masks, locks, noxious substances, guns and other items if they appear to have the intent of foiling police crowd-control efforts. That tentative vote is likely to lead to a final vote Tuesday.

The legislation is driven by the G-20 Summit, expected to attract thousands of protesters, but would not go off the books after the Sept. 24-25 gathering.

Assistant City Solicitor Yvonne Hilton told council that it would allow police to act quickly when they see demonstrators preparing to block public access to an area.

"If 10 folks are walking with a carabiner and a pipe, near an intersection, [police] could prevent maybe a sleeping dragon from being set up," she said.

A carabiner is a mountain-climbing clip and a sleeping dragon is a formation used by some protesters who lock themselves together to thwart police removal.

"If you're a plumber, you might have a pipe with you," said Councilwoman Darlene Harris, who abstained. "A lot of women carry Mace. ..."

Councilman William Peduto registered the only no vote.

I have a feeling this will stay on the books until there is a HUGE backlash.

i didn't expect it to go any other way. in there line of thinking, the only reason people have things like that is so that they can use them against a govt. getting out of control, and they just can't have that now can they.

    my take on it:

Cop 1 - 'look, he's peaceably protesting while carrying a gun in the open, in a holster!'
Cop 2 - 'well he must intend to use it, because if he didn't he wouldn't have it!'
    Cop 1 - 'Get him!!!!'

they might as well declare martial law while there at it, so us lowly peasants don't get to out of hand.

my tinfoil might be a little to tight today though.

time for an OC "Lock" day? lol.

looks like there is a issue of "foiling police crowd control measures." how will they enforce this when people are complying with the law

Nope looks like a very public boycott of all businesses inside the city of Pittsburgh by gun owners.

The last thing these morons need is people publicly saying they will not step foot into any business located inside the city proper until this law is history.

What gives? Only one "no vote"? Why weren't there any other objections?

Well the whole worlds eye's are on Pittsburgh now, so me thinks the NRA might have something to say about this as to not lose face on such a large public spectacle.
