    Default Saiga Conversion

    Fellas:

I'm planning to move to SEPA in a couple months, Bucks Co to be precise. Can you think of any gun smiths in the area that can convert a Saiga to the proper configuration.

I'll do that or just buy an AK variant

Might depend on which rifle you're looking at the .308 has some quirks to it. That being said any smith worth his salt should be able to do it.

Then there should be no problem since the only things that have to be done is

    1. Compliance Parts
    2. Removal of plate above trigger guard
    3. Drill and tap for a bullet guide (to be able to feed AK mags)
    4. Trim mag catch (to fit AK mags)
    5. Refinish rifle

Its not a hard process at all requiring few tools. Bigger issues come into play depending on what type of conversion you had in mind (such as underfolder, russian sidefolder with latch, threaded barrel, etc)

My only concern is I'd like to hand this over to a trained professional. This is going to be a SHTF weapon so I can't afford to screw it up myself. Any local shops would be appreciated

So I understand, hopefully some local guys down there can suggest a smith. I did my own work and I'm in the middle of the state so I'm not much help to ya in that regard.

    Howdy G22Dude,
Not what you are asking, but a thought. How about keeping the Saiga as is, use it for a b/u rifle, and putting the conversion cost into the purchase of a standard AK once you are a Pa res?
I am a PRNJ escapee, and have kept my .308 Saiga stock, works very well as is.
I have a nice underfolder AK in 7.62x39 for that caliber. Decent AK's in 7.62x39 are going for under $600. By the time you pay for the parts and the work, you will be well into that.

IMO once you convert a Saiga, it's one of the best AK's period...

Just out of curiosity what AK's do you consider decent for under $600?
