Default buying a gun in DC

The Washington Post ran a feature article about the process of acquiring a handgun for residents of Washington. The reporter is (surprise) someone with no familiarity with firearms at all, and the piece makes mention of the personal concerns, as well as the lengthy process.

The act of firing the gun is a genuine thrill, and the gun itself is, I realize, an alluring work of art. The metal is sleek and smooth, the trigger tight, the sight a precise, simple and altogether new way of looking at the world. I take the gun -- my gun -- out of the box and, knowing it's unloaded, pull the trigger. I love that satisfying snap as the hammer drops and the cylinder clicks into place, ready to fire once again. The gun's weight, once solely the cause of angst and discomfort, now feels impressive.

Interesting article. Actually it was well written on the pains (even now) of owning a gun in DC. The reporter kept an open mind writing the article and there was no bashing. I don't want to give away the story but it did not end bad.

I thought that the journalist did an excellent job. Alot better that anyone expect from most other journalists.

The WaPo is actually a pretty good newspaper, with quality investigative journalism and reporting for the most part. Sure, every now and then they'll get something spun the wrong way, but not on a consistent basis like the New York Times, which has become much more akin to the New York Post - a tabloid rather than a news outfit. Then, there's the editorial board, which is robustly left-leaning, as most newspaper editorialists are. But even there, they keep some right-leaning columns running. I started taking the Post when I lived & worked down there, and now I think I might read the Post more or less regularly for the rest of my life. They have more and better news than CNN.
