    Default Gun Free School Zone?

I'm just trying to clear up a matter in my mind, and I need some guidance.

A gun free school zone: Does this mean you can't carry into the school, or does this mean on all school property (if so, does this extend as far as the drug-free school zone--ie: the sidewalks and street in the immediate area of the school?).

    Thanks folks!

take this with a grain of salt but here is the Wikipedia definition of the law:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun-Free_School_Zones_Act

Which does seem to contain most of what I've heard and read elsewhere about the "zone"

    From the Article:
"The term school zone means in, or on the grounds of, a public, parochial or private school; or within a distance of 1,000 feet from the grounds of a public, parochial or private school."
    Also:
"If the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtain such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license; which is--not loaded; and in a locked container, or a locked firearms rack which is in a motor vehicle..."
So if I'm driving through a school zone (within 1000ft of school) with my weapon holstered; I can go to jail for 5yrs and/or receive a $5000 fine?

What happens if I must drive through a school zone to get to a highway? What if I'm taking the dog for a walk, and live across the street from a school (again, within 1000ft. In fact, I live about three blocks from a middle school)

Am I reading this correctly, or am I just nuts?

Alright, I am nuts. It appears the exception is if you have a CCW, OR it is unloaded and in a container.

The exception is not that you have a CCW AND it's unloaded.

That's what I get out of it too, but then I could be wrong. Anyone else care to try and clarify??

So-called federal law trying to usurp the state's constitutionally-guaranteed power and authorities? Hah!

The so-called Gun Free School Zone Act puts most of Cleveland, Ohio off limits for firearms. Where, then, is it permissable to have a firearm? In Cleveland? In Ohio? Anywhere? Good question since no signs are posted anywhere marking the limits of the so-called gun-free school zone. School zones for drivers, however, are clearly posted.
