Privacy when purchasing a firearm.
Hi everyone. I am new here but I have been following this forum for some years.
Anyways I have a question.... I purchased a pistol last week, Walther PPKS, and I thought I would ride over to my neighbor and let him have a look since we shoot together a lot.
Before I could even pull the firearm out to show him he says "I heard you bought a James Bond gun."
I said who told you that? He told me he was at our local gun store and they told him and even used my name telling him pistol type and caliber.
I didn't think much of it at the time but it started to eat away at me that someone at the gun store would be giving out my private information like that.
So my question to any legal experts here is..... Are they legally able to give out private information like that?
The more I think about it the more pissed off I am getting.
So did they break the law?

I'm no legal expert but I don't think that any of that is private information since a total stranger can be standing right beside you throughout the entire purchase process.

First of all, Welcome to the party!
I agree that this was not too bright on the part of the store, and without knowing the relationships between you, them, and the friend, it is hard to say if they were way over the line or only slightly. I do not think there is a law on this but as they say I am not a lawyer (IANAL) so we can wait until one chips in.
If it were me, I would make it known to the folks at the store that I do not appreciate this kind of thing. I feel what guns I do or do not own is nobody's business but mine. I would also try not to overreact if no bad was intended, I know a few LGS that I deal with where casual conversation is part of their 'charm' and it would not be good to shut that off. It all depends as I noted above.Illegitimus non carborundum est

Did they only tell your FRIEND or did they tell the whole neighborhood? I've got a buddy and if the gun shop told him that I bought a new pistol, he'd be jealous and call me dirty names for not taking him along.

I seriously doubt any laws were broken, but discretion is an important function in most businesses.

Telling the guy they told would be like telling the whole neighborhood. He has a big pie hole.
