LTCF Application question
Hey Everyone,
I just returned to Pa (thank god)after living in California for 6 years.
My question is with the LTCF app. On the instruction page is states that if "you choose Self-Defense, on the line next to other please give a brief explanation why...such as carrying money from work to bank or carrying gun from work to home" Do you think that personal protection would be good enough to write in the "other" line? I personally though self-defense was self-explanatory. Any ideas on this? Thanks and I am glad to be back in Pa.

Re: LTCF Application question
When I got mine I just check self defense and that was it. As far as I know all you have to do is check one or more boxes and that's it.
"Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin'" -unknown

Re: LTCF Application question
All I did was check self defense and what I hear if you choose more than one self defense will be what shows on the license anyway.
You should be good to go.
And welcome back.

Re: LTCF Application question
Franklin county...several sheriffs like to add little tid bits to their instructions....most of them not legal.
I would just check the Self defense block...and leave the line blank. If when you get there, they say "something has to be there"...write "defense of self"...
but thats just me....

Re: LTCF Application question
i'd write "see attached" and then attach a copy of the latest FBI Uniform Crime Report.
note: i probably would not actually do that...but it would be funny.
as long as you do not write anything stupid there (that would bring in the character and reputation clause), they cannot legally deny you your LTCF because of what you do or do not write there. there are just a few sheriffs out there who like to pretend PA is a may issue state.F*S=k

Re: LTCF Application question
I went with "Protection".
I may have over-thought it, but I figured I'm not the only one I might defend with my carry weapon.

Re: LTCF Application question
Check "other" and write in ALL LAWFUL PURPOSES
Any mission, any conditions, any foe at any range.
Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.

Re: LTCF Application question
Might not be the best choice.
They might then be able to insinuate 'professional' and say you need 235.
Several licenses ago when I lived in and applied in Montgomery County the deputy told me that Self Defense was the only valid reason as it was spelled out in the PA constitution. An anti Sheriff might try to make an issue of it.
Since, I've always just checked "Self Defense", no further explanation needed.

Re: LTCF Application question
When I submitted my application in Chester County, I had checked something other than self defense. Quickly glancing at it, the officer pushed it back across the counter and told me to check "self defense." I checked the box (there was no space for an explanation), and my LTCF says "self defense."

Re: LTCF Application question
Yep as others have said SELF DEFENSE is the best one to check. Although no matter what is listed on the actual license, it doesn't matter, as the LTCF is valid for all lawful purposes: To conceal, to carry in a vehicle, to OC in Philly and to carry in a declared emergency.
The only problem I see that might arise is that if you show the PA LTCF to a LEO in a reciprocal state and it reads GUN COLLECTING or TARGET SHOOTING or something other than SELF DEFENSE, there might be a bit of a hassle until it is checked out.
If the sheriff wants something else to explain SELF DEFENSE on his "other paperwork",
just write in SELF DEFENSE as well
