    Default eye dominance questions...

To make a long story short, im right handed but im left eye dominant.

Im more comfortable shooting a long gun left handed,

but im more comfortable shooting a pistol right handed, and this is where my eye dominance messes me up,

Ill draw my pistol right handed, I "see" everything with my left eye. Its kinda hard to explain but hopefully you are getting the picture. It makes my accuracy alittle something to be desired, not horrible, much better when I close my left and look with my right, but I have to force myself to do it and it doesnt come "natural"

Does anyone out there have any ideas on what I can do about this? Any help or advice I could get is greatly appreciated.

    I am "cross-dominate" as well.

    its an easy fix.

turn your head slightly to the right, about an inch will place your L eye where your R eye was just about.

    TA-DA !

now your L eye lines up with your R arm (I assume you are shooting weaver) you can shoot with your L eye and R hand AND keep both eyes open.

In other words: it's difficult shooting strong hand only being cross-dominate. But shooting 2 handed it can be fixed with practice.

    Get a laser.
Do a combination of what Shawn & bert said while keeping mental note of your strikes and your position on the firearm.
Find what works best for you and keeps you consistant.
    Then practice, practice, practice.

I find this helps. Being right-eyed, this is how I shoot left-handed. Basically, if you start from the Weaver stance, gun in left hand, then tilt your head left and shrug your shoulder slightly (so you don't have to tilt your neck uncomfortably far) until your cheek meets your shoulder. The left eye looks down the sights from this position.

I don't know if this is considered good technique but it works for me.

I'm in the same situation. I shoot with both eyes open.

To me, if you can learn to shoot with both eyes open, you're better off in a couple of respects.

1- You're not robbed of your peripheral vision, which could be key if your trying to keep your ass alive.

2 - You're not going to have to fight your body's natural reaction to keep both eyes open in a high stress situation.
Complete equality isn't compatible with democracy, but it is agreeable to totalitarianism. After all the only way to ensure the equality of the slothful, the inept and the immoral is to suppress everyone else. - Iain Benson

Both eyes open is the way to go if you can do it. I need to squint a little but I find that even momentarily closing the left eye helps get the sight picture together nicely.
