Looking for a certain case law citation...

The one where the man was recording, from private property, the state police conducting some sort of checkpoint on a highway somewhere. They charged him with something, and he ended up winning. Thanks

Do you know at least what state this happen in?

It was the PA state police.

You won't find any case law. The situation was probably resolved at the local level (magistrate) because there was no foundation for the charges.

Probably got charged with disorderly conduct or hindering a police investigation.

I dunno I think there might be caselaw because its illegal to record without all party's being notified but somewhere there was a ruling that said police business is a public interest so you don't have to get consent for the audio.

I think the last part about public interest might have developed via case law and I think thats what he might be looking for.
