    Default "cheap" range ammo

i've mentioned a few times that i havent been to a range in quite some time...and as such havent bought any ammo in an even longer time...(years)

So my question is...and i know that cheap is a relative term...AND i know most ammo is scarce right now...but if i go to a store to buy 9mm ammo for range practice, what should i be looking for? brands, jackets, etc.

I think i heard that some ranges are not setup for some jackets....???

My carry ammo is hollow point...and i dont even know what brand it is. I'm going to have to check my range bag to see if i have anything left in there...

I see your in levittown. The only reliable source of ammo right now is Mike's. He is a little high but he sells American Eagle which is great ammo for putting holes in paper.

The new Walmart is the cheapest if you happen to walk in within an hour of the shelves being stocked.

Ready Aim Fire has Speer Lawman for even more that Mike's. Bring a rag with you to keep the front 1/2 of your gun presentable.

Walmart and a bit of luck is the best bet for affordable 9mm. Dick's also has it, but it tends to be a bit more expensive, and watch out, because some is the blazer aluminum case, which some guns may not like.

Sellier & Bellot is good ammo. 115gr. FMJ in 9mm.

    Thanks for the responses.

Googled the example of American Eagle...and found this at Cabela's. In the chart I see two options for 9mm: 115 gr. FMJ and 147 gr. FMJ FP.

I'm assuming FMJ is Full Metal Jacket. what is the FP? and what is difference betwn 115 and 147 gr?

    Just checked my bag:

Federal (red box) .38 spc semi-wadcutter 158 gr lead
Federal (green box) .25 auto 50 gr FMJ
UMC (yellow box) .25 auto 50 gr Metal Case
    Remington (green/yellow) 12 ga 2 3/4 mag
    Remington (green/yellow) 38 spc semi-wadcutter 158 gr lead
Remington (bubble pack) 30-30 win 170 gr soft point core-lokt
    Remington/Winchester mix 20 ga rabbit/squirrel, dove/quail
    8 rounds of 243 win
A plastic "nest" box of 3 types of 9mm hollow points...

I use Blazer Brass (made by Speer) that I buy at Wal-Mart. They also carry Federal, as well. Both are full-metal jacket. Both are the same price, which may vary from WM to WM. Expect to pay $8.97 to $9.47 for a box of 50...if there is any in stock.

I've never had a problem with the Blazer Brass. I've never had any problem with the Blazer Aluminum, either - I picked those up for $9.99 at my almost-local store.

You can also buy Winchester white box at WM in 50 count and 100 count for a little more. (Also an FMJ.)

FP is a Flat Point bullet. The FMJ FP still has a full metal jacket combined with a flat point.

The different numbers, in this case 115 & 147, are the weights of the projectiles themselves in grains.

There are 7000 grains in 1 Lb., if you're curious.

    Thanks again guys...

So the the grain # really doesn't really make a difference for use at the range?...

I like to use the same weight bullet that I'll be carrying normally, just so I know where they're going to impact if I ever need them.

The bullet weight will make a difference if you're shooting at a metallic "Swinging" target. The heavier weight hits harder. It has something to do with physics and all that.
