Crichton-McCormick Park, Portage Boro in violation
Well, now I have joined the ranks of those fighting for our gun rights at the local levels.
It took a while, but I finally found a set of rules for the local park in Portage PA. Sure enough, one of the rules states that, " No person, other than an officer of the law, shall carry any firearms or air rifles within the limits of the park." Another section states that violation of Park Rules could result in fines up to $600.
I drafted a polite letter and sent it off to those "that it may concern". I will keep you posted on what comes out of this.
If I end up going to a Borough Meeting, I'll be sure to post something in hopes that we can get a good turn out.
Hopefully they see the error of their ways and just correct this issue without any problems. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control....

Hey, that was pretty fast. I just got an e-mail back concerning my letter about the Guns Not Allowed in Portage Park. I will post the response here. So far so good.
Good day…..I am the Borough Manager of Portage Borough and also a gun owner with a license to carry a firearm, so I find your concern interesting. I will be researching the items that you have outlined in your e-mail and will be presenting the information to the member of councils at the September meeting. I will follow up with you after that meeting on how they plan to proceed.
Thanks,The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control....

Good point. I can always show and see if it is brought up or not. I do think it is something that they really have to address initially anyway. They may think they can ignore it and I will go away, but SURPRISE!!!!
May have to start OCing when I take the kids over to go swimming. Or maybe an PAFOA Meet and Greet picnic at the park. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control....

OK, here is the latest response that I got. Give me some ammo to fire back with.
Randy,
It is yet to be seen what the fate of the ordinance or law that you are referring to will be. At this point Council is deciding how this will be handled. However, it appears that since the Park is owned by the Borough it can establish rules not necessarily a law on what can and cannot be done on the property. The feeling is that there is no reason fire arms should be carried in the park being that the property is solely deeded for recreational purposes and children frequent the property. So in summary, I believe at this point the "rule" will remain in effect but the fate of the "law" is yet to be seen.

wow, are they that dense??? We need a state investigatory agency to prosecute Official Oppression to include elected officials, school employees, law enforcement officials, and anyone else employed or empowered by any level of government.

Go there with a firearm when you get arrested they will have to cite the law they are arresting you under. You have statements showing they are aware of the law regarding their "rule" and are acting in willful opposition to the law.

This post has the relevant PA law quoted.
The park rules are a preemption violation.

Re: Crichton-McCormick Park, Portage Boro in violation
(a) General rule. No county, municipality, or township may in any manner regulate the lawful ownership, possession, transfer, or transportation of firearms, ammunition or ammunition components when carried or transported for purposes not prohibited by the laws of this Commonwealth.
How hard is it to understand?
