Default Ruger SR 556 or Colt 6940 ?????

    Hello everyone,

I am a noob to the Ar15 format rifles and I am looking to purchase one next month for my birthday present . After alot of info overload from tons of different sites on the web I narrowed down my search to 2 different models at about the same price.

The first one being the new Ruger SR 556 and the other being the Colt 6940. I don't know the differnce between the "piston" of the Ruger vs the DI of the Colt, which would be better? I also know that the twist rate for the Ruger is 1 in 9 and the twist rate for the Colt is 1 in 7.

I guess what I am asking is which one would be a good accurate rifle and also a good quality rifle. Both are good names I guess , but any info on the two rifles would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance
    Rich

The Colt. The Ruger is yet unproven...and doesn't look terribly promising, IMO.

Guns should not be sold for $1700 which beat themselves up like that, and put metal shaving in your action.

    Also, specifically:

    Conclusion:

This many stoppages in my opinion are unacceptable even with a new rifle. It did do better than I thought it would have but still in my opinion it didn't do any better than I have had direct impingement AR15s do. I've had DI ARs do 1/2 and less than that stoppages in the first 1K rounds. The receiver extension does show signs of pretty extreme bolt tilt....not good. I can't recommend this rifle.
Just like cars, I wouldn't recommend getting the latest and greatest...unless you're willing to put up with the headaches and recalls that go along with the territory.

Colt knows how to make a gas AR... it's a much safer bet.

yeah go with the Colt gas piston they are alot better then the ruger sr556. the SR556 is new i wouldnt trust it in the long run wait and see if any problems arise in the future so get the Colt for now its a better gamble.

I'd go with the colt too. The Ruger is too new.

You could also look at the colt 6920's too.

Whatever you do don't pay more than $1200 for a 6920 or more than $1400 for a 6940.

The prices are coming way down and anything more than that would be too much in the current market.

The Colt isn't a "gas piston" it's just direct gas impingement, FYI.

    Agreed.

I'd rather have a 6920 and put the kind of rail I want, on it...than be stuck into having Colt's upper/rail system. It's a little wider than I like, and I don't really care for the "removable lower rail so you can mount a grenade launcher" option.

You would be incorrect. The 6940 is DI also.

Funny you should mention that, I am thinking of building an AR pistol with at least one of them for CCW.
