    Default Old Remington-Peters

I inherited a brick of old Remington-Peters .38 Special ammo a couple of years ago. The lead has turned white and the ammo is most likely inert due to age.

Is there any value in the ammo other than for nostalgia or collectors? I could pull the bullets and dump the powder and primers and reload it for my use.

    Any good thoughts?

At some point moisture must have gotten to them.
The box they came in is probably worth more at this point...seriously.

I would keep them around just to have them. However, you won't know if they will shoot until you try one.

I wouldn't count on the shells being inert. I've heard of 30-06 ammo from WW2 being shot after spending decades under water (although military grade ammo is/was often sealed around the bullet and primer, while yours won't be). Still, I have shot some of my dad's 20-30 year old 357 and 30-30 ammo without major issues, and some of those bullets had a pretty thick coating of lead dust/powder on them. As long as the shells weren't actually in water, they'll probably still go bang. Accuracy, however, could be another story...

The presence of a white covering is not necessarily an indication they were exposed to moisture - that is just oxidation that all metals exposed to air, over a period of time, will exhibit. I would bet that they aren't "inert" and will probably work just fine.

There's moisture in the air that caues oxidation.
    Not bashing anyone...just saying.
Yes, chances are they will still work.

I forgot to mention we tried to fire two rounds with two different revolvers and neither one went off. That is why I am assuming they are inert.

At that point, I'd declare them bad, and pull them down for brass and lead content. For a box or two, it doesn't make much sense to fool with them and try to fire them all.
