Can't respond to book titles but look for this info in books you choose.

You need to find a method to kill the deer. Archery, rifle , shotgun, handgun.

Know how to use that particular device and know it will hit where you aim whether you are standing or sitting. Practice offhand as well as off a bench.

Find deer. Or you will go home skunked.

Learn where to hit the deer for a quick kill from different angles or presentations

Learn how to track a deer on the chance you don't get a quick kill.

Learn how to field dress an animal and care for the meat till it's processed.

Learn how to clean your weapon.

Learn how to cook the game. Steaks, chops , roasts, tenders, jerky etc etc.

Aside from that, deer hunting is great even if you don't score.

I've had good hunting success over the years and can attribute some of that success to "North American Hunting Club". I've subscribed to their subscription for years and also purchased the video and book series they had available. A member here has the video series available in the "Pay it Forward" thread. Although not sure if he/she has gotten rid of it. It was a wealth of information. The Pennsylvania Game and Fish subscription is also very helpful.

Reading books are great but my opinion is to find someone who has ben hunting for years and is willing to help show you the ins and outs of hunting and about being in the woods and looking for signs of wildlife. To me that was the best teaching method and am still learning.

Perhaps a few additional items to address.

How to read a topograpical map.

How to dress properly in weather.

Lost, cold, wet, injured. How to deal with these issues if they should happen.

Communication with others.

Map your intended hunting areas and let others know generally where you will be before venturing out.

Daypack, what to carry. ( I carry a lot).

I agree with Vetter, you need to find a good mentor. A book may give you a tip or two, but if you really want to get into the woods, and be successfully it takes some work. Yes you can teach yourself, ya you can get lucky from time to time, but as an adult often times the fellowship of other hunters is as enjoyable as the hunt itself.

27Hand- has some great tips as usually, there really is much to consider when you think about it. I've been in a hunting culture all my life. If you haven’t find a good predator mentor!

My two favorites..
Whitetails by Leonard Lee Rue III
One of the original experts in whitetail study. Began his career back in 1939.
Excellent book with information on all aspects of whitetail behavior, environment and natural history.

Big Bucks The Benoit Way by Bryce Towsley
Secrets from "America's First Family of Whitetail Hunting".

These won't replace the "on-the-job" training you'll get from actually livin' in the woods or being mentored by a few seasoned hunter's, but they are good reading to supplement the hands-on stuff. Get a copy of each and keep 'em in your "bathroom library". That way you won't miss any valuable woods time.

the books are a good idea since ur just starting. once uve done some reading get out in the field and start doing some observing of there behavior and feeding patterns and in a few weeks ull start seeing some changes in those patterns so just get out in the woods and do some scouting around and ull start seeing those things and always remember stay down wind and be quiet.

THis book may not help you in the "learning to hunt info" side of things but EVERYONE who is a hunter or interested in hunting should read this book, esspecially if your from PA.
