    Default Hunting Weapon Restrictions

I am considering trying my luck at hunting this fall. I wanted to know if there are any restrictions on which guns you can use to hunt. Specifically, if you can use an AR-15. This was with Deer Hunting in mind, but I guess I would like to know how it applies to bear hunting as well.

No semi-auto rifles allowed. See the PA State Game Com. website.
"Hunter Education Class" highly recommended, if not required nowadays.

Nope, semi-auto rifles are not allowed for any kind of hunting in PA. I've heard that if you disable its ability to fire semi-auto then it would meet the letter of the law, but I also heard you'd definitely be hassled by the man if he happened upon you.

Do yourself a favor and use another rifle for deer hunting. IMO an AR15 is not the best choice for deer hunting even if it were legal. .223 is a pretty light round for deer. I know its taken deer all over but that doesn't mean its the best or wisest choice......

PA only allows Semi-Auto shotguns for small game AND for deer in the SRA [special regulations areas]. It is something lots of guys want changed but the game commission isn't moving.

Pump action rifles are favored by the 'Spray and Pray' crowd...I don't see the difference, allowing semi-auto rifles couldn't be worse than some Yahoo pumping 'em all out as fast as possible.

Please contact your state reps (especially those in the Game and Fishery)

This would at least allow rimfire .22 for some things. It's a step.

    contact state reps for what?

Semi auto rifles in the PA woods would be a very bad thing, I've hunted in areas where semi-auto is legal (Maine) and it would be a horrible thing to have down here, especially with the army of Orange and their extensive marksmanship abilities.

The US military once refused to use issue semi-auto rifles because they didn't believe the soldiers could control their fire... they were right, hunters are much worse as they don't get the training.

No Semi rifles in PA for hunting deer, bear, or any other big game... for the sake of all of us in the woods.
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.

Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

Alot of people disagree but I'm OK w/ the Rem pump being the Potter County machine gun...I take pride in the fact that most of the deer I shot only took one bullet. I bought my 30-06 in 1979 and I still have 6 rounds from the second box...the only box not shot at a target to sight in or check the scope zero...

Look at it this way. It's a great opportunity to purchase another rifle and develop an appreciation for a different platform.

Thats a good way to put it, lol. I call it feeding the addiction.

I'm probably cutting back on my shooting over the rest of the summer so I can get an Inline muzzleloader since I hunt allegheny county a good amount (centerfire rifle restrictions).
