Re: Which has greater muzzle flash? 9mm vs .40 vs .45
No matter what you shoot, you are burning powder, emphasis on burning. That said, barrel length, weight of charge, and speed of powder make a big difference. Most of the new fangled 'short barrel' stuff is loaded for low flash, or so they say. I would think heavier bullets with faster powders wouild be the least likely to burn lots of powder in the barrel. The opposite of the typical 'open-gun' loads where you want lots of gas running through your comp.

Re: Which has greater muzzle flash? 9mm vs .40 vs .45
On a more serious note, My ruger sp-101 with a 3 inch barrel shooting 125 gr 357 hollowpoints lights up the the entire northwestern hemisphere -while my glock 9mm shooting a similar bullet weight at almost the same velocity doesn't- a lot has to do with barrel length and powder charge(type of powder- slow or fast burning -tho these are relative terms...)All pistols will have some flash as the unburnt powder continues to burn as it leaves the barrel - shorter barrels yield more unburnt powder and more flash - I think this has less to do with the diameter of the bullet and more to do with the length of the barrel. There are many "low flash/low recoil defense rounds out there -see which works most reliably in YOUR gun...

I shoot with my eyes closed so I don't know anything about muzzle flash.

i love the muzzle flash i get in my face at work when people want to fire the hot load hornady's out of the S&W 500 on a humid cloudy day.
Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

Re: Which has greater muzzle flash? 9mm vs .40 vs .45
guy at the range was shooting 3.5" barreled M&P357(chambered in .357sig), and was popping out pretty nice flash out of it. it was later in afternoon tho..
None of my guns, other then wheelguns, belches out any flash, except my M44, which spits out HUGE fireballLast edited by Mity2; July 28th, 2009 at 11:44 AM.
