Am I nuts?

My socalled friends think I'm nuts/crazy for owning a few handguns and a shotgun. I told them they are for self defense. When they found out I carry concealed, they became histerical. Has this happened to anybody out there? One told me not to carry when I'm with him. Am I nuts?

looks like it's time to get new, more intelligent friends.
You could always sit them down and ask why they are agaisnt guns. Try a little gun education with them, maybe offer to take them to the range.
. If they are not receptive, walk away.

Why would you think you are the one who is nuts? You didn't panic and get irrational because of the whole thing.

I've dealt with people like that many times. Sometimes you can talk them around to your way of thinking. Other times you can get them to accept it even if they don't exactly approve.

Some people will never see reason. They are deathly afraid of firearms themselves and not the idiots who use them to cause death, destruction and mayhem.

If you can, talk to them about it. If they are unresponsive to rational discussion? Ditch them. Anyone who thinks that protecting yourself is evil or scary isn't someone you want to associate yourself with.

Sounds like a good reason not to be with him again.

I've never had anyone flip out about my guns or my carrying. Even my family (we're all from Jersey) took it pretty well. My mom's been incredibly anti her entire life, and has refused to even look at my guns. I have to be a bit careful how I carry around her, just to respect her feelings on the situation. However a couple weeks ago, she told me she wants to get a gun and possibly an LTCF...

Actually, I need to start a thread about that.

I did manage to get all, but one to accept it. The other said just don't tell him when I'm carrying. They still think I'm nuts though.

No, they are. Not to mention irresponsible for failing to take charge of their own defense.

And I would tell the friend that said not to carry with him not to call anymore since he clearly doesn't respect you.

I think we've all encountered people like this in our lives. There's nothing nuts about taking responsibility for your own safety so don't worry about it. Just go on with your life and if they can't accept your decision they'll usually fade into the shadows and disappear on their own. If they don't and instead try to get you to change your decision you just have to tell them "this is how it is, accept it or move on." Not always an easy thing to do, but sometimes necessary.
