Re: Inexpensive .22 rifle?
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Marlin 25N. I picked mine up for $135 (+transfer and tax) a couple months back and have not regretted it one bit. It's an absolutely outstanding gun. It's small, the bolt works great, never given me a single problem, and it's very consistant for being a .22 bolt. I'm a novice shooter, and I'm making 2" groups at 75m.

Re: Inexpensive .22 rifle?
Wouldn't suggest a Remington 597, i'm selling mine because I just bought a Ruger 10/22 used for $135. I'd go with a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin 60, which i'd pick up a Marlin 60 if I could find a decent deal on one.
The 597 is an ok gun, but I was able to get better groups with the 10/22 using iron sights vs. using a scope on the 597.

I have a Marlin 60, but I like the Marlin 39A better.

Marlin 981t if you can find one. Tube fed bolt action.
Or a Savage.

Re: Inexpensive .22 rifle?
we have been looking and she is still new to guns she really likes shoting anything that goes bang lol now its all about the looks to her which i understand cause i would never buy a gun i did not think looked good.
i like the 10/22 but for some reason she has a hard time shooting mine it just does not fit her she does do well with a model 60 though

Re: Inexpensive .22 rifle?
Just an really late update in november i gave her a marlin 795 we have already shot about 200 rounds through it. For the 100 i spent for it it shoots great no problems so far accept i can't find any magazines for it.
thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Inexpensive .22 rifle?
Good call on the Marlin. I got mine a few years back (exactly the same as yours) and I love it. I don't shoot it much anymore, but it's a very nice gun, and very accurate at long distance for a 22. I think IIRC, mine was shooting around 2" groups with open sights, at around 40-50yds. And it stayed pretty true up to around 60-70.
