Id stick right with the 243 for him. Plenty of gun for whitetail and still smail enough for him. A 260 still wouldnt be to bad , but why not wait a couple of year and move him up to a 270?

I do not know if good or bad but I carried a 30/30 winchester @ 9. Seems very "Old School" in this time.

My fist deer rifle when I turned 12 was a Remington 760 pump in .270. My dad’s buddy loaded up some shell for me and we headed for the woods. 9" pie plate at 40 yard bang the scope came back an cranked me right in the eyebrow. I got blood in by eye for the first time! The shells were loaded so hot the case cracked inside the gun and we had to use a ramrod to knock it out. I'll never forget that as long as I live. I was a big kid holding the gun as best as I could, I have to caulk that one up to reloading error. If the .243 is doing the trick might as well wait a few years.

While I can't recommend a rifle for your needs, I can applaud you for taking the boy hunting. Clapclapclapclapclap.

Kudos for teaching your son at an early age.

    First, welcome to the board.

Not that i'll add much to your question - but i have to be honest with you. When i was hunting with my dad as a young lad, the last thing on my mind when i saw a buck was the recoil of the rifle. At 10, i was shooting his 30-06. I didn't like it much shooting off the bench but once i saw a deer, the thought of recoil kinda left my mind.

At 12, i had saved up enough money from my paper route and bought my own rifle - it was a 22-250 and that was much nicer to shoot than the -06. Plus it was fun shooting ground hogs with too.

I've never shot a 260 but i have shot a 270. I think i'd stick with the 243 for him until he gets a bit older - but like i said, recoil was never on my mind when there was a deer near me - it was hard enough to keep the shakes down - so, i focused on that mostly.
