Unemployment tops 10 percent in 15 states in June
31 mins ago
WASHINGTON – Unemployment topped 10 percent in 15 states and the District of Columbia last month, according to federal data released Friday. The rate in Michigan surpassed 15 percent, the first time any state hit that mark since 1984.
The Federal Reserve this week projected that the national unemployment rate, currently at a 26-year high of 9.5 percent, will pass 10 percent by the end of the year. Most Fed policymakers said it could take "five or six years" for the economy and the labor market to get back on a path of long-term health. To get there, consumers must return to a regular spending groove and housing prices need to start rising again.
Home to the nation's struggling auto makers, Michigan has been clobbered by lost factory jobs. Its jobless rate of 15.2 percent in June was the highest in the country.
Still, the U.S. Labor Department said it's the first time in 25 years that any state has suffered an unemployment rate of at least 15 percent. In 1984, it was West Virginia.
The state unemployment report underscores the damage that the longest recession since World War II has inflicted on companies, workers and communities.
The other 14 states where unemployment topped 10 percent last month were: Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Tennessee.
In May, the jobless rate topped 10 percent in 13 states and the District of Columbia. Alabama and Georgia joined the list in June.
The states with the lowest unemployment rates in June were: North Dakota at 4.2 percent, Nebraska at 5 percent and South Dakota at 5.1 percent.
While Michigan's rate was the highest in the country in June, the record-high for the state was 16.9 percent in November 1982.

Depending on which numbers you use, it has been over 10% for a while now.
But you are right -- this is change we can believe in. And pretty soon with all this crazy spending by .gov -- change is all we will have in our pockets.

I'd prefer the number of people actually employed... It seems it is just too complicated to give an actual number of those unemployed.

Re: Unemployment tops 10 percent in 15 states in June
You'll find, as with any economic data, nuance matters. There are several different versions of the unemployment data depending on what you're measuring. For example, the U2 measurement, which is what we commonly think of as "the unemployment rate", has a specific technical definition that may or may not tell you what you want to know. Another unemployment measurement, known as U6, is another measurement of unemployment, but due to the fact that it measures not only those not working but those who are underemployed, is a higher number than the U2 number.
Similarly, "actually employed" is a complex number. It could measure (making this up):
1) Those working in any job, anywhere, for any number of hours.
2) Those working in any job, at the number of hours per week that they seek to work
3) Those working in a job in their field of training or desired field of work, at the number of hours per week that they seek to work
4) (Insert other definitions here)
Depending on how you phrase the question, you'll get different answers. This is not, necessarily, an easy question to answer in a straightforward manner because the number complies with specific technical definitions.

It don't matter what the numbers are, when you're one of the unemployed. All we wanna know is when are the jobs coming back ? Gettin hard to feed the family on nothing.
So, whatever these jack-off's have in mind for a plan, they better make it quick.

Not to piss on the parade of Obama Greatness but...
10% is only people actively SEEKING employment, if you aren't looking for a job they don't count you.
Current estimates are nationwide the "Underemployed/Unemployed" number is somewhere around 20%!!!!!!
If you work 4 hours a week at walmart as a greeter you are not counted on the Unemployed stats, Unemployment only looks at people who are currently unemployed, and still looking for work.
also that number is based of something like 1000 house holds / state... get real. The "underemployed" number is based off payroll companies like ADP, which have a much better idea of who is being paid for what then the gov't does

The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.
Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.
